The Three Most Common Signs That You Need to Replace your Dental Crown

When you first get your dental crown, you might feel invincible. After all, you’re probably enjoying a level of comfort and confidence that you might not have had in years, especially if the tooth that was covered was in really poor condition.

However, nothing lasts forever, including your dental crown. Eventually, you’re going to have to think about replacing it. Here are some signs that your dental crown has failed, or that it could soon.

Biting Down Doesn’t Feel Right

When you first get your dental crown, you may notice that even just holding your mouth in a neutral position feels a little strange. That’s because you’re used to a tooth with severe decay sitting in that position; having something sturdy there might be kind of uncomfortable.

Over time, holding your mouth in the new position will start to feel good; after all, that’s how you’d be holding your jaw if you had a mouthful of healthy teeth. If you start to notice that your bite feels off again, maybe in the way that it did before, that could be a sign that your dental crown has shifted. If this feeling endures, it’s worth talking to a dentist about it.

Your Gums Are Receding

If your dentist isn’t careful when putting on your crown, it’s possible that your restoration can start to do some damage to the surrounding gums. As a result, your gums may start to recede away from your dental crowns.

This could also be caused by advanced gum disease which has begun to attack the gum line. In either case, you should probably let your dentist know that you’re having this problem.

Your Crown is Old

Even if you haven’t noticed anything wrong in particular, it’s possible for a crown to just suddenly break or fall out one day after years of wear and tear. It’s much easier—and more comfortable—to replace the crown before that happens.

After around five years, you should talk to your dentist about the need to replace your dental crown. In either case, you should be seeing your dentist biannually; this will give them an opportunity to check your restoration for damage.
