If you are interested in health-related topics, you have probably heard different opinions about fluoride. Many health professionals firmly believe in its benefits, and they advocate for water fluoridation in public utility systems. But why exactly do many municipal governments across the U.S. choose to put fluoride in the drinking water? How safe is it, and what benefits does it provide?  This blog post contains some information that you may find interesting.

Fluoride and the Prevention of Dental Cavities

Dental decay is one of the most common health issues among both children and adults. In fact, according to one estimate from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 90% of adults in the U.S. have experienced at least one cavity in their lifetime.

Cavities form when plaque, an acidic biofilm, develops on the teeth. It can wear away at the enamel, demineralizing it to the point where small holes start to develop. Fluoride can help to fight this process. It is a naturally occurring mineral that can help to rebuild lost bits of tooth enamel. Therefore, it can play an important role in cavity prevention.

Fluoride can be especially beneficial for children because it can help teeth to develop so they are healthy and strong.

Because of fluoride’s important role in dental health, adding it to tap water is beneficial. All you have to do is stay hydrated (and let the water touch your teeth) to lower your risk of cavities.

Is Fluoride in Tap Water Safe?

Opponents of water fluoridation make all sorts of accusations against it. Some claim that it can contribute to the development of osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer) or that it can impair cognitive development in children. Such ideas are standing on shaky ground. In fact, one study published in 2020 found that “community water fluoridation is not associated with an increased risk for osteosarcoma.”

A separate study, conducted in Europe, concluded, “based on the totality of currently available scientific evidence, the present review does not support the presumption that fluoride should be assessed as a human developmental neurotoxicant at the current exposure levels in Europe.”

The most common side effect of fluoride is that of fluorosis, which is usually manifested in a harmless discoloration of the teeth.

Should You Drink Fluoridated Water?

Whether or not you choose to drink fluoridated water (or use fluoridated dental products) is a matter of personal choice. However, most dentists agree that the benefits of fluoride far outweigh any potential downsides.
